"Smokey" Joe Wood, pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, warms up before the start of game in 1912.
It may have only taken place mere months into Fenway’s existence, but it’s been called one of the greatest regular-season wins in Red Sox history. In a matchup of brilliant aces, Smoky Joe Wood defeated Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators, 1-0, on Sept. 6, 1912. Wood finished Fenway’s first season with an amazing 34-5 record: Johnson was 32-12 for a Senators team that came second, behind the pennant-winning Sox.
