A certain George Herman Ruth, Jr. – you may know him better as “the Babe” – made his major-league debut on July 11, 1914, as a pitcher for Boston. The Bambino wasn’t perfect at the start: he struck out in his first at-bat, and earned a no-decision for this pitching performance, though Boston did defeat the Cleveland Naps. During his World Series debut two years later, Ruth threw 14 innings against Brooklyn in a 2-1 Boston victory.
