Initially called the Bicentennial Bowl when it was inaugurated in 1976, the Independence Bowl is played at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La. In 1990 the the game became known as the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl, and it endured taunts like “Weedwhacker Bowl” until the sponsorship ended six years later. Since 1995, the game has pitted a Southeastern conference team against an at-large opponent.
