In these Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, file photos, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, left, in Atlanta, and Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh in Foxborough, Mass., coach during their NFL football conference championship games.
No set of brothers had ever served as head coaches of NFL teams, let alone led them to the Super Bowl. Until the Harbaughs came along, that is. San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, 49, played quarterback for Michigan – and finished third in the 1986 Heisman trophy balloting – before embarking on a 15-year NFL career. Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, 50, went right into coaching after college; he bounced around as a college assistant, before the Philadelphia Eagles hired him as special teams coordinator in 1998. (Their father, Jack, was a long-time coach, and served as an assistant to legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler). In 2011, the brothers faced off against each other on Thanksgiving, with the Ravens prevailing 16-6. The Super Bowl will take this sibling rivalry to a whole new level.
