All Snead needed to win the Open was a par on the final hole. If only he had known that at the time. Instead he was mistakenly told that he needed a birdie, and played No. 18 more aggressively than he needed to. After slamming his drive into the rough, Snead failed to recover, and shot neither par nor birdie, but a triple bogey. He finished in a tie for fifth place.
