1999 Pinehurst Resort and Country Club
During a dismal round, Daly, the rotund, cigarette-smoking everyman with the long drive and short fuse, took out his anger on a moving golf ball. On the par-4 eighth hole, Daly hit two consecutive putts from off the back of the green. Each fell short of the putting surface and sloped back towards him. After the second putt, he walked toward his moving ball and whacked it over the green with his club, incurring a two-stroke penalty. He finished with an 11, and vowed never to play in the U.S. Open again. “I’ve just had it with the way the USGA sets up its courses,” he said. Regardless, Daly was back in 2000 — and shot a first round 83 before withdrawing in disgust.
