He stood at the 18th tee box with a one-shot lead. Despite hitting only two fairways all day, Mickelson pulled out his driver and proceeded to whack his shot off of a hospitality tent. Mickelson then tried to miraculously cut the ball around a set of trees to the green, but his shot rocketed off a tree and journeyed back near his feet. He finished with a double bogey and lost the Open by a stroke, leaving the raucous, pro-Mickelson New York crowd in stunned silence. “I just can’t believe that I did that,” he said afterwards. “I am such an idiot.”
