New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will sit out the rest of the season with an ankle injury, the team announced on Wednesday evening.

Jeter was removed for a pinch runner on Saturday in a game against the division rival Boston Red Sox after hurting his left ankle, according to the Associated Press. A CT scan was negative, but Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Jeter is done for the year anyway.

“The entire season has been a nightmare for me physically,” Jeter said. “It’s a fitting end.” Jeter played only 17 games this season, as he was continuously on and off the disabled list.

New York will have to continue the hunt for the American League wild-card without him. When asked if the 39-year-old Jeter had reached the end of his career, Cashman said no.
