The Wife-Carrying World Championships are held every year in a small town in Finland. This macabre competition works pretty much as it sounds a man slings his wife across his back and runs through dirt, sand and brackish pools of water as fast as possible. It’d be almost funny if one didn’t bear in mind the origins of the sport: the age-old practice of men sneaking into neighboring villages or homes and stealing away unwilling women for their own households. The race may be done in good spirits, but it’s channeling generations of oafish hubris and sexual slavery. That’s not quite something worth cheering for.
