It seems as though a grand finale on the Champs Élyssées would be inevitable for France’s greatest sporting competition, but it wasn’t until 1975 that the Tour’s organizers reached an agreement to host the final stage in the heart of Paris. Belgian sprint star Walter Godefroot won the first mass finish, Frenchman Bernard Thévenet took the overall title, and another Tour tradition was inaugurated.
