An ex-Dallas Cowboys player was sentenced to 180 days in jail and ten years of probation Friday for a 2009 car crash that cost a friend and teammate his life.
Former defensive tackle Josh Brent was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter earlier this week for being drunk when he crashed his car, killing Jerry Brown. Brent could have faced a much harsher sentence of up to 20 years in prison, the Associated Press reports.
On Thursday, prosecutors argued that Brent’s crime warranted a lengthy prison sentence, pointing to past drunk driving infractions. Brent’s attorneys, however, pushed hard for probation.
During the trial, Brent’s lawyers denied the charges that the 320-pound lineman was intoxicated while driving and disputed blood tests taken shortly after crash. George Milner, an attorney for Brent, argued he was merely “guilty of being stupid behind the wheel of a car.”
