When the Oak Grove High School football team takes to the field Friday night to play for the Mississippi state championship, they’ll have a coach on their sidelines who’s no stranger to high-stakes games.
Longtime Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, a three-time NFL MVP who played in two Super Bowls and won an NFL title in 1997, has taken his talents to the small town this year, serving as Oak Grove’s offensive coordinator. A Mississippi native, Favre lives in nearby Hattiesburg, and he’ll be trying to help Oak Grove win its first state title against Tupelo High School.
During Favre’s playing days, he used the high school facilities to stay in shape in the off season, and after retiring, he began helping to coach the football team. While he has frequently dismissed a return to the playing field, Favre and his agent insist he’s keeping his options open for next year. Favre said that he enjoys coaching. “It’s cutting into my time in the woods,” he told the AP. “But I’m not going to complain too much about that.”
Mississippi’s six state title games this weekend will be streamed live by the state’s high school sports network.
