In a repeat of last year’s U.S. Open final, Serena Williams triumphed over Victoria Azarenka after a nerve-wracking three-set match on Sunday evening. Her 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 victory was the American’s fifth U.S. Open crown and her 17th career Grand Slam — the sixth-most in history and only one shy of legends Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.
Noticeably disturbed by gusts of wind that topped 15 mph, Williams lost her temper in second set, having squandered a big lead and allowing her Belarusian opponent to draw level. The 31-year-old managed to regain her composure, however, and as the match clock hit 2 hours and 45 minutes she was once again jumping deliriously with joy.
