They were the ninth seed. They were from the Ivy League. And they had the distinct disadvantage of possessing one of the least intimidating, least aggressive names in the history of competitive sports. Yet the University of Pennsylvania Quakers managed to fight their way to the Final Four in 1979. The games leading up to the March 24 semifinal included a 72-71 defeat of No. 1 seed North Carolina. Unfortunately for the Quakers, their final opponents had several things going for them. They were a second seed. They were from a Big Ten school. And they were called … the Spartans. As if that weren’t enough, among their warriors was one Magic Johnson. Penn lost 101-67.
