An estimated 1.2 million migrant workers are living in Qatar, fueling the emirate's building boom
Since the beginning of 2012, 502 Indian workers living in Qatar have lost their lives, official figures confirmed by the Indian embassy in Doha shows.
According to the U.K. Guardian, how the migrant workers died or where they worked has not been revealed; however, an analysis of a Nepalese workers who died in the Arab emirate recently — 382 over two years — showed that sudden heart failure or workplace accidents were blamed for two-thirds of the deaths.
In 2010, Qatar was controversially awarded the 2022 Fifa World Cup, causing a building boom.
An estimated 1.2 million migrant workers live in Qatar, many working 12-hour days in sweltering conditions, causing human rights groups to criticize both world soccer governing body Fifa and the national government.
