Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti was hurt after a serious crash during the Grand Prix of Houston on Sunday afternoon. Thirteen spectators were also hurt.
In the last lap of the race, Franchitti’s car was bumped by Japanese driver Takuma Sato, thrusting it into the air, where it flew toward protective fencing. The car spun multiple times against the fence, shearing off part of its side and sending debris flying.
Franchitti’s condition was not immediately known. He appeared to be moving. His team owner told NBC Sports that Franchitti was complaining of a sore back and ankle, but otherwise was awake and alert.
