David Ortiz recorded his 2,000 hit with a straight shot that bounced off the centerfield wall in Fenway Park on Wednesday night, as the Red Sox steamrolled the Detroit Tigers with an embarrassing 20-4 win in Boston.
“I’ve never really seen that many happy faces in the dugout at the same time,” Ortiz told ESPN. “It was like lighting a firework. … I see everybody happy. It’s like the fireworks just keep on coming.”
“Big Papi” entered into one of baseball’s most elite clubs in the sixth inning with an RBI double. As Ortiz stood on second base with helmet in hand, Fenway’s speakers pumped out the score from Robert Redford’s 1984 classic baseball film The Natural, while the Red Sox partisans in the stands gave a thunderous ovation for one of the most beloved players in the team’s history. Earlier in the game, Ortiz hit one of the Red Sox’s eight homers of the game — helping set a new franchise record.
