In 2008, seven-time Cy Young award winner Roger Clemens told the Houston Chronicle that he had “made mistakes” in his personal life. While multiple allegations of infidelity had popped up in the press, what Clemens was apologizing for, exactly, was vague, especially since he had also strictly denied having a relationship with Mindy McCready, the country music star the Daily News claimed he met as a 28-year-old father of two back when she was only 15-years-old at a karaoke bar in Fort Meyers, FL. When asked about it, McCready told the paper she “cannot refute anything in the story.” Clemens, on the other hand, stuck to his guns, telling the Houston Chronicle “This relationship has been twisted and distorted far beyond reality. It is just one of many, many accusations that are utterly false.” Much of this emerged during the course of Clemens’ defamation lawsuit against former trainer Brian McNamee, whose testimony was key in the steroid case against the famous pitcher.
