I know Hoosiers, the classic 1986 movie about a tiny Indiana high school hoops team that makes in improbable run to the state title, isn’t about college basketball. But around the start of March Madness every year, I either rewatch the film – run the picket fence, fellas – or at least listen to the Oscar-nominated score, for a little mood music. Call me cheesy, I don’t care. It gives me goosebumps.
This year, the sounds are even sweeter, as another movie score you know you love – the theme from Rudy, the film about a scrappy Notre Dame practice football player who finally gets in the game – is also playing in a TV loop, in an ad for retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Both films were scored by composer Jerry Goldsmith, which makes sense. The themes sound somewhat similar.
So … which theme gives you more goosebumps? For me, Hoosiers gets a slight edge (I counted them. Not really.)
