Updated: Apr. 19, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. EST Happy Anniversary, London. The 2012 Olympic Games were a joyous occasion for those lucky enough to enjoy the sports and sunshine on offer. Home crowds witnessed wonderful performances from the host nation, and many others, and for 17 magical days, it felt as if London was the global capital of sport. A year on, we’ll get to do some of it all over again. In a sensible bit of rebranding, this July’s London Grand Prix will be called the London 2012 Anniversary Games. Traditionally held at Crystal Palace, it will take place in the Olympic Stadium on the anniversary weekend of the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Games this July 26-28. Tickets went on sale Friday morning and the first two days sold out in 75 minutes. (MORE: TIME’s 2012 Olympics Coverage) And the confirmed names will surely help put bums on seats. On Tuesday, Britain’s golden girl, the 27-year-old heptathlon winner Jessica Ennis announced her participation, and she’ll compete against Olympic champion Sally Pearson in the 100m hurdles. And she’ll be joined at the Games by the two British males who also won gold on the night known as Super Saturday: 5,000 and 10,000 meter winner Mo Farah and long jumper Greg Rutherford. “I have amazing memories of competing in the Olympic Stadium and it will be good to step out on that track again in front of a British crowd,” Ennis said. “I’ll never forget the noise the crowd made when I competed last August and know that the draw of the stadium and the great line-up of athletes will fill the stands and make it another incredible occasion.” (VIDEO: Britain’s Track & Field Golden Girl Jessica Ennis Gets Set for her Home Games) In total, all five of Team GB’s track and field medal winners will be there, along with 14 of Britain’s 16 Paralympic medalists. But perhaps the biggest draw will be a certain sprinter. On Wednesday, the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, confirmed that

Do you believe in second chances? Well, the chances are that if you’re Dwain Chambers, the British sprinting star who has had his lifetime Olympic ban overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), you certainly do. The 34 year-old was once considered one of the leading lights of Britain’s sprinting program: he’s won gold medals at the Commonwealth, European Championships and World Indoor Championships (either by himself or as part of the 4×100 relay team) and has also medaled at the World Championships. Chambers has been the fastest Brit over 100m every year since 2008 and his personal best of 9.97 (set in 1999) is the second-fastest time ever recorded by a Briton, behind Olympic champion Linford Christie. (LIST: Top 10 Sporting Cheats) But ever since failing a drug test in 2003 (he would be banned for taking the designer steroid THG), and then confessing to an 18-month doping regime under Balco pharmacologist Victor Conte, it’s been a tough road back to redemption. Many people didn’t think he deserved the trip (he even tried to make it in NFL Europa and, after an injury curtailed that venture, went down the reality TV route). In a forthright interview with the Daily Telegraph, Chambers poured his heart out. He appears contrite, offering apologies such as “all I can do is say I am sorry,” and “I have made a mistake, a massive mistake, and all I want is another chance to correct it, a chance to do the best for my country.” Chambers finds himself in a position where he can potentially compete at his home Olympics after the British Olympic Association (BOA) lost its fight with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The key issue was that the BOA believed it had the right to continue imposing lifetime Olympic bans on its athletes, regardless of suspensions being served. But the CAS judgment was that “the by-law is a doping sanction and therefore not in compliance with the WADA Code.” In the aftermath of the ruling, the language on both sides

Imagine you were a basketball player who committed one innocuous foul – and the referee sent you to the showers. Or, imagine you’re an offensive lineman who jumped offsides, then spent the second half on the sidelines. It would never happen, of course. So why was Usain Bolt kicked out of the 100-meter final at the World Track and Field Championships on Sunday? Bolt, the world’s fastest man, left the starting line .104 seconds too soon, so he was disqualified, because of a new rule installed by track’s governing body that expels racers after a single false start. (MORE: Usain Bolt, Person of the Year Runner-Up, 2009) Before 2003, sprinters were not disqualified until a second false start. To prevent situations where a handful of runners jump the gun and delay the beginning of a race, this rule was changed. After one false start, any sprinters who subsequently leave the starting blocks early were disqualified from the race. That was strict. But this new one-and-done restriction is a total buzzkill. Track is a game decided by hundredths of a second. Is it fair to disqualify a sprinter, who has spent months, if not years, preparing for a specific race, because of a twitch? Plus, Usain Bolt is the sport’s biggest, if not only, attraction among casual fans. Almost everyone in that stadium in Daegu, South Korea, and among the millions watching on television, was watching because of Bolt. No one wins (except Bolt’s fellow Jamaican, Yohan Blake, who won the gold in Bolt’s absence). Track should get rid of this rule, right away. Because if Bolt false starts at next summer’s Olympics in London, and has to sit that one out, international outrage will ensue. And legions of fans might swear off track and field for good.
