Dear commenters, Things are changing at TIME.com. Along with our brand-new look and feel (more on that here), we’re happy to announce we’re switching to LiveFyre for our new commenting system. Change is scary, but we think this change is definitely for the better. LiveFrye will provide a better experience and make your life just a little more social. The new system will pull in comments from your favorite social networks, creating more robust conversations about the topics you care about most. For example, if you comment on one of TIME’s Facebook posts, your comment will now appear in the comments section of the article on TIME.com. You can also easily share comments you write, like or hate to social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. The bad news is that Disqus handles no longer work. But you can sign in with Facebook, Twitter, Google, or create a new TIME.com log-in using Livefyre. Old comments will be transferred to the new system, but it might take a few days, so be patient. We’re confident that this change will provide a better experience for you. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any issues. We’re here to help. And for more information about our new look, check out a note from TIME.com’s Managing Editor Cathy Sharick.

Long bemoaned as the most brutal place to see a football game -- coupled with the fact that its roof couldn't stand up to a standard Minnesota snowstorm in 2010 -- the Metrodome in Minneapolis is overdue for a replacement. Recent action by the Minnesota legislature could make that a reality. But before it's gone, TIME takes a look at the worst sports arenas in the country.

It says much for the love and respect that Britain has for the game of darts and its iconic players that much of last weekend’s news, both online and on television, was devoted to the passing away of the Scottish player Jocky Wilson, who died on Saturday at the age of 62 (he’d recently been suffering with the lung disorder chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). And the two-time world champion deserved all the attention which came his way, seeing as his playing style brought so much happiness to his fans, who loved Jocky because they knew he was as equally comfortable throwing darts and sinking a pint in the pub as he was on the grandest stage of them all, which was winning a major title on the BBC. Indeed, from his debut in 1979 until 1991, he impressively managed to reach at least the quarter-finals of the World Championships, with surely his greatest moment being his defeat of the “Crafty Cockney” Eric Bristow in 1989. Leading the tributes was the best player that the sport has ever known, 15-time world champion Phil “The Power” Taylor, who said, “He was such a good laugh to be with. People talk about the great characters in darts and he’s one of the greatest. Jocky had false teeth, and I remember playing snooker with him. He asked someone to clean the white ball and took his teeth out to mark the ball.” But amidst the warm words, it would be remiss to not mention a magical non-sporting moment back in 1982. The flagship music program on the BBC was Top of the Pops and it wasn’t a surprise to see the hugely popular Dexy’s Midnight Runners appearing on the show. A big photo of Jocky Wilson appeared as the backdrop in the studio as the band performed their latest hit single; legend has it that production team pranksters were responsible for the joke. Only one catch: the track was called “Jackie Wilson Said.” And while the producers still get the blame, an article in

Did the designer Stella McCartney hurt Team GB by not including more red in the Olympic outfits? Both a sports psychologist and an academic who have researched the impact of uniform color on athletic performance think that the host nation may have put itself at a disadvantage by not having enough red. “Obviously she has designed these from a fashion point of view and was not taking into account the possible effects that might have on performance,” Professor Robert Barton told the Guardian about the contentious uniforms (they’re mainly blue and white, apart from a mostly red trim around the collar). “Given there’s an obvious justification for [including more red] and given the effects that we and other scientists have found, it does seem like a mistake.” Barton co-authored a 2005 report that linked the color red to an athlete’s chance of success. Indeed, while this initial study was based on combat sports at the 2004 Athens Games, further research has shown that the trend holds up across a range of different disciplines. Using British football as a reference (and as we all know, statistics can be used to show whatever point the writer wishes to make), just look at Manchester United (nicknamed the Red Devils), who have dominated the Premier League since its inception in 1992. And before Man U. began their era of supremacy, local rivals Liverpool (who also wear red) were the undisputed kings of the game. And if we want to go back even further, the British national team enjoyed its crowning achievement – beating West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final – while wearing, you guessed it, red. The West Germans preferred white, and paid the price. (LIST: Top 10 World Cup Games) In golf, we know Tiger Woods always wears red on the final day of a tournament. According to Tiger, it’s because his mother thought it was his power color (“and you know you should always listen to your mom”). Or as Golf Magazine once noted, “There’s more to red than that.

Get those juiced goats off the field, please. As first reported by the Pueblo (Colo.) Chieftain, three animals — two goats and a hog — tested positive for a banned substance at a junior livestock show at the Colorado State Fair in late August. That’s right: kids from 4-H and Future Farmers of America, ranging in ages from 11-18, gave the animals the illegal substance. While Chris Wiseman, general manager of the Colorado State Fair, couldn’t recall the names of the substances for which the animals tested positive in a conversation with NewsFeed (he was on the road, at an agriculture conference in Wyoming) he characterized the substances as those “that would improve the performance of the animal.” In other words, they made the animals meatier. Turns out that goats, and goateed baseball players, use performance-enhancing drugs for the same purposes. (LIST: Top 10 Evil Animals) One of the disqualified goats won first prize in its category, and sold for $5,500. The other goat sold for $1,300. The two young people who raised these animals have the same last name, and Wiseman confirmed that they are a brother-sister tandem. The hog had all sorts of problems. It won second place in the competition, but was later disqualified because officials discovered that the person who presented the hog — the “exhibitor” — did not raise it. Still, the swine could have been sold later on, but the positive drug test disqualified it from the sale process. Last year, Wiseman said, the second place hog sold for about $16,000. This year’s first-place hog sold for $20,000. The sibling goat presenters saw no money from their sales. Checks aren’t written until the animals pass the drug test (officials take a tissue sample, before the animals are slaughtered). The meat was destroyed, and the buyers have a right to a refund. Alternatively, they can donate the funds to a state fair foundation, or place it in an account to be used at next year’s junior sale. Wiseman said that in his 16 years working

It’s funny — in the sad way — how so many adults leading college sports these days engage in the kind of dubious behavior that they’d never tolerate from their own players. Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel, for example, is firmly in the hot seat — for good reason — because he covered up the misdeeds of his players to NCAA watchdogs. Next season, the man who led the University of Connecticut to the men’s basketball title, Jim Calhoun, will serve a five-game suspension because of recruiting violations committed under his watch. On April 26, we found out that 9 of the 11 members of an NCAA panel that will help decide the fate of the Fiesta Bowl, among many excesses, paid the strip-club bill of its CEO, attended a retreat sponsored by the bowl that included free meals, resort rooms and golf outings. And also this week, the New York Times ran a front-page story exposing some of the tricks that schools play to appear compliant with Title IX, the landmark law intended to insure gender equity in college sports. In order to satisfy one of the three Title IX requirements — that the proportion of athletic opportunities offered to both men and woman mirrors that of the overall student body; that a school demonstrate a continual expansion of athletic opportunities for an underrepresented sex, usually women; or that the athletic interests and abilities of women are accommodated — schools often count men who practice with women’s teams, for example, as women athletes. Or schools sometimes put women’s names down on a team, even though they have little to do with that team; the Timespiece pointed to a few women who were officially on the University of South Florida’s cross-country squad but were unaware they were even part of the team. The practice is known as roster management. “It’s distasteful,” says Lisa Maatz, director of public policy and public relations for the American Association of University Women (AAUW). (See a photo essay over the brief history of cheerleading.) It’s also unnecessary.

You’re a Chicago Cubs fan. Or a Mariners fan, a Mets fan, a Marlins fan, whatever — you have a favorite baseball team whose fortunes keep you up at night. And that team loses, a lot. But now, sitting next to your team’s manager, a scruffy baseball lifer, in the dugout is not just another scruffy baseball lifer, spitting tobacco. Instead, by his side is a guy with a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, a beautiful mind who can calculate complex probabilities, in real time, in his head. He can tell you the odds of so-and-so throwing such-and-such a pitch to so-and-so on such-and-such a count. Sure, he looks funny in a baseball uniform. But have you seen the guts of graying baseball managers and coaches spilling over those needless belts? This stats coach, or whatever you want to call him, is a resource, to be trusted by the manager when he should play the percentages, or ignored if he decides to just go with his (ample) gut. (See the top 10 U.S. sports strikes and lockouts.) If such a stats head were at the service of your manager, wouldn’t your team be better off? Could it possibly hurt to try him out? On March 4 and 5 in Boston, hundreds of the most gifted minds in sports gathered at the 5th Annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, an event that has grown in such importance that, yes, it’s now “presented by ESPN.” Dubbed “Dorkapalooza” by ESPN columnist Bill Simmons, the conference is one part wonkfest, in which research papers with titles like “Optimizing an NBA Team’s Approach to Free Agency Using a Multiple-Choice Knapsack Model” are presented, and another part powwow. The geeks who used to work on Wall Street and other quantitative fields have gained enormous clout in the front offices of pro sports teams. And their power will only grow. But we’ve known that for some time now. The Moneyball craze in executive suits was one the hottest trends of the prior decade. At this point, it’s more
