On Sunday, at this year’s Indianapolis 500, two three-time Indy winners will line up at the Brickyard: Helio Castroneves, who last won in 2009, and Dario Franchitti, who has won two of the last three Indy races. The race hasn’t seen two three-time winners since 1987; only Rick Mears, A.J. Foyt and Al Unser have won four Indy titles. A few days before the 500, TIME caught up with Castroneves, otherwise known as the guy who won the fifth season of “Dancing With The Stars,” back in 2007. So, honestly, do you get recognized more from driving, or from “Dancing With The Stars?” I have to say, when you’e dealing with 20 to 25 million people watching you every Monday and Tuesday, yes, it’s a lot. The females know you a lot from the dancing. The guys, from the racing. Are you nervous, going for your fourth title? Despite who it is, it’s great to see history — and I’d love to be part of that. But it’s a great opportunity for people, the generations that never saw that scenario. Over 100 years, only three guys are able to do it four times. That’s amazing. It’s already an elite group. There are so many drivers, good drivers, that didn’t win once. There’s a lot of hungry people right now. What makes Indy special? The tradition is amazing. For me, every time I come back here, I hit reset the button. OK, start all over again, learn what the car is going to do this year. Even if the car is the same, the speeds are a little bit higher than what they used to be last year. Temperature might change, sometimes we have to bring different tires. That’s the approach that I take. I always reset when I’m starting, so that I know what I need to build on. (MORE: Why NASCAR Is All About Danica) What is the IndyCar series doing to attract new young fans? A few things. Social media is becoming huge in any company today, and

Businesses are always being squeezed by the twin pressures of creating new customers while not alienating the ones they have. That’s certainly been true of NASCAR, which has been trying to diversify its fan base beyond the aging white males who now constitute its largest audience segment. So in signing up the National Rifle Association to sponsor a top-flight Sprint Cup race at the Texas Motor Speedway— a race now called the NRA 500— NASCAR is feeding its base. But is that at the risk of alienating potential new fans elsewhere? “We are never a political organization,” NASCAR chairman Brian France told me the day before the Daytona 500. “People are entitled to their own opinions. We will let them have their debate.” France wasn’t addressing the NRA specifically then. In a statement, NASCAR said: “Race entitlement partnerships are agreements directly between the track and the sponsor. NASCAR reserves the right to approve or disapprove those sponsorships. The race sponsor for Texas Motor Speedway’s April event falls within the guidelines for approval for that event.” NASCAR didn’t say what kind of sponsor would fall outside those guidelines. But the NRA 500 will take place just weeks after NASCAR hosted family members of victims of and first responders to the Newtown massacre at the Daytona 500, its biggest event. Michael Waltrip, who drives for Swan Racing, switched his racing car number to 26—to represent the number of shooting victims— to support the Sandy Hook Special Support Fund. Fans texted in donations from a number posted on every car in the race. NASCAR drivers and officials also visited Newtown, and France personally made a $50,000 donation, matching the amount given by the NASCAR Foundation. (MORE: Daytona Postscript – Why NASCAR Is All About Danica Patrick) Gun control advocates were quick to cry hypocrisy and point out NASCAR’s previous association with the NRA, and that neither Waltrip nor any NASCAR officials would make any statements about the gun control controversy. “We were moved when we went up there and met with the families,

You have to call it the Danica 500 now. Although she faded to eighth place on Sunday, the moment Danica Patrick won the pole position for the Daytona 500 — a week before the green flag — the Great American Race revolved around her. Jeff Gordon, one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers, officially became The Guy Next to Danica when he qualified second to earn the first-row starting spot adjacent to hers. His own daughter wanted to get a picture with Patrick, who has won exactly zero races to Gordon’s 87 victories. “I sent a note to Danica,” said Roger Penske, one of NASCAR’s legends and team owner. “’You are now our new American hero.’ My wife and daughter have such a high regard for her.” Never mind that Penske’s top driver, Brad Keselowski, is the defending NASCAR champion. Oh, the race. Patrick was clearly the speed car going in, having turned in 198-mph lap in qualifying. Although she quickly dropped back after the start she held her place in the top 10 for most of the race. Then in lap 90, she took the lead, and in the process become the first women to lead a lap at Daytona— she was also the first woman to lead at the Indianapolis 500. But it was some guy named Jimmie Johnson, the winner of five previous NASCAR championship titles, who would grab the glory with a late move to win his second Daytona. (MORE: Sunday’s Daytona 500 Drops The Flag On New NASCAR Gen-6 Car) This year’s Daytona was always going to be something of a mystery because of the introduction of NASCAR’s new Gen 6 cars. Built to look more like those that come off the assembly lines, stock cars, in other words, they had never been raced before. In practice earlier this week, drivers were reluctant to get too close to each other, fearing crashes. For Tony Stewart, Patrick’s boss at Stewart-Haas Racing and the winner of the wrecked-marred Nationwide series race the day before—more than 30 spectators were injured

Just a day before this year’s “Great American Race,” on the very same oval of asphalt, a racing calamity that left at least 30 onlookers injured Saturday has changed the pace of the 2013 Daytona 500. A last-lap crash during a second-tier Series Drive4COPD 300 race sent debris flying, including a tire that ripped through the fence with some pieces reaching the upper deck of spectators, as the Associated Press reports. A forklift worked to remove driver Kyle Larson’s engine from the fence while emergency crews responded, treating 14 fans on site and sending 19 fans to the hospital, according to the AP. Hours after the race workers moved swiftly to begin repairing the fence and cleaning up the wreckage left behind. (MORE: Sunday’s Daytona 500 Drops the Flag on New NASCAR Gen-6 Car) Spectators snapped photos and uploaded videos to YouTube showing the terrifying incident, but within minutes the clips were removed by NASCAR, sparking public backlash over the sporting organization’s decision to do so. NASCAR reserves all rights to film and broadcast of its events, but the prompt removal underscores the question of how the use of copyright infringement can control the realtime coverage, or even fan experience, of an event. The autoracing company released a statement to the Verge citing the decision was out of respect for the injured audience members. ”Information on the status of those fans was unclear and the decision was made to err on the side of caution with this very serious incident,” the statement said. But YouTube has since reversed the blocking of fan videos, which had already gone viral despite NASCAR’s removal. In a statement provided by the Washington Post, YouTube said, “Our partners and users do not have the right to take down videos from YouTube unless they contain content which is copyright infringing, which is why we have reinstated the videos.” While crashes are nothing new to NASCAR, accidents involving fan injuries are a rarity. The wreck, fresh in spectators’ minds, raises new questions of safety at the sport’s most famous speedway,

I ran into Carl Edwards at Daytona this week. So, in fact, have a lot of people—especially other people driving race cars. Edwards has crashed a number of times during practice and qualifying rounds, leaving him behind the wheel of a backup car this weekend at the Daytona 500. “I wrecked a lot of stuff; the guys have been yelling at me,” he says. “I was walking to the gym and someone said, ‘What, are you afraid to drive?’” What’s driving Edwards to distraction, and into other cars, is the introduction of NASCAR’s Gen-6 car, new this season. To reconnect with fans, NASCAR decided that its racing machines should more closely resemble the autos driven by the rest of us. But the Ford model, which Edwards drives, has a slightly different aerodynamic profile than the Chevys and Toyotas he races against. In the previous generation of race car, known as the Car of Tomorrow, the aerodynamics were much more aligned, but critics and drivers complained that it limited the driver’s ability to draft and pass other cars and engage in side-by-side racing. Now, the Car of Tomorrow is the car of yesterday. (PHOTOS: A Half-Century of the Daytona 500) Given Edwards’s wrecks, and a few other incidents, drivers turned cautious, avoiding side-by-side duels. “Here at this racetrack the car slides around more,” says Edwards. “It doesn’t get stuck to the racetrack.” There’s another issue, too, says driver/team owner Tony Stewart of Stewart/Haas Racing: because all the cars are new, the supply of parts has been limited. “We didn’t have a spare car if we crashed our cars in the qualifying,” he admitted to TIME. But not all racers have experienced negativity with the updated vehicle. The Gen-6 car has done wonders for one of Stewart’s drivers, Danica Patrick. NASCAR’s only female star captured the pole position last Sunday by driving the fastest qualifying lap, which didn’t require racing in traffic. (MORE: Soon You’ll Be Able to Buy a NASCAR Vehicle—Or at Least One That Looks Like That) Patrick has also captured

The eighty-one-year-old Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone is normally just thought of as eccentric, but at the Chinese Grand Prix last week, he sounded completely out of touch with reality. Asked by a reporter if he thought Bahrain was politically stable enough to hold the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix on April 22, he was unequivocal in his response. “There’s nothing happening (in Bahrain),” he said. “I know people that live there and it’s all very quiet and peaceful.” Hours later, clashes broke out between protestors and security forces after the funeral for Ahmed Ismail, who was shot during a demonstration in March. Some of those in attendance threw firebombs at police and the authorities responded by firing tear gas and birdshot to clear the crowds. “No F1, no F1,” Ismail’s mother, Makyia Ahmed, told The Associated Press. “They killed my son in cold blood.” After weeks of debate over whether the Bahrain Grand Prix should be canceled for a second straight year because of the ongoing political unrest in the country, the FIA—Formula One’s world governing body—announced on Friday that the race would go ahead as planned. The organization said FIA President Jean Todt had met with politicians, diplomats and the crown prince during a visit to Bahrain in November and was confident that enough security measures would be in place to ensure the safety of all the participants, as well as the fans. Adding his two cents, John Yates, Scotland Yard’s former top counter-terrorism official who is now advising the Bahraini government on police reform, said the country is predominantly peaceful and social media sites are presenting a “distorted picture” of the situation. “Along with my family, I feel completely safe. Indeed, safer than I have often felt in London,” he wrote in a letter to Todt. (MORE: Disappearing Dissent: How Bahrain Buried Its Revolution) Amnesty International paints a far different picture, however. In a report released Monday, the London-based human rights group said not much has changed in Bahrain since authorities violently cracked down on the tens of thousands
