(HARRISBURG, Pa.) — The two surviving children of sports great Jim Thorpe won a critical ruling Friday in federal court that could clear the way for his remains to be removed from a mausoleum in the Pennsylvania town that bears his name and reinterred on American Indian land in Oklahoma. U.S. District Judge Richard Caputo ruled in favor of sons Bill and Richard Thorpe and against Jim Thorpe borough in northeastern Pennsylvania, saying the town itself amounts to a museum under the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. The men’s lawyer, Stephen R. Ward of Tulsa, Okla., said they will now pursue the legal process to have their father, who won the decathlon and pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics, returned to Sac and Fox land in central Oklahoma. Messages seeking comment from lawyers for the borough, and top borough officials, were not immediately returned. They could appeal Caputo’s decision. Ward said the brothers were pleased with the decision. “They and their brothers and other members of the family have wanted this and have worked for this for a long time,” he said. “They well remember how the wishes of the Indian members of the family were not respected concerning their father’s burial.” After Jim Thorpe died without a will in 1953 at age 64, third wife Patricia Thorpe made a deal with two merging towns in the Poconos, Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk, to have the new town named for him. His remains have been kept for the past six decades in a borough-owned roadside memorial along the Lehigh River. Caputo wrote that the result may seem at odds with notions of commercial or contract law. “Congress, however, recognized larger and different concerns in such circumstances, namely, the sanctity of the Native American culture’s treatment of the remains of those of Native American ancestry,” the judge said. “It did so against a history of exploitation of Native American artifacts and remains for commercial purposes.” Ward said Bill Thorpe, who lives in Oklahoma, and Richard, a resident of

(LONDON) — London’s police force says it will have 40 percent more officers on duty at the London Marathon than last year, to reassure participants and spectators in the wake of the Boston bombings. Chief Superintendent Julia Pendry of the Metropolitan Police says there will be several hundred more officers policing Sunday’s race, as well as more search dogs. She said Friday that officers in London are in close contact with Boston police and the FBI, but have found “no link whatsoever” between London and the double bomb attack that killed three people and wounded more than 170 at the Boston Marathon on Monday.
Updated: Apr. 19, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. EST Happy Anniversary, London. The 2012 Olympic Games were a joyous occasion for those lucky enough to enjoy the sports and sunshine on offer. Home crowds witnessed wonderful performances from the host nation, and many others, and for 17 magical days, it felt as if London was the global capital of sport. A year on, we’ll get to do some of it all over again. In a sensible bit of rebranding, this July’s London Grand Prix will be called the London 2012 Anniversary Games. Traditionally held at Crystal Palace, it will take place in the Olympic Stadium on the anniversary weekend of the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Games this July 26-28. Tickets went on sale Friday morning and the first two days sold out in 75 minutes. (MORE: TIME’s 2012 Olympics Coverage) And the confirmed names will surely help put bums on seats. On Tuesday, Britain’s golden girl, the 27-year-old heptathlon winner Jessica Ennis announced her participation, and she’ll compete against Olympic champion Sally Pearson in the 100m hurdles. And she’ll be joined at the Games by the two British males who also won gold on the night known as Super Saturday: 5,000 and 10,000 meter winner Mo Farah and long jumper Greg Rutherford. “I have amazing memories of competing in the Olympic Stadium and it will be good to step out on that track again in front of a British crowd,” Ennis said. “I’ll never forget the noise the crowd made when I competed last August and know that the draw of the stadium and the great line-up of athletes will fill the stands and make it another incredible occasion.” (VIDEO: Britain’s Track & Field Golden Girl Jessica Ennis Gets Set for her Home Games) In total, all five of Team GB’s track and field medal winners will be there, along with 14 of Britain’s 16 Paralympic medalists. But perhaps the biggest draw will be a certain sprinter. On Wednesday, the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, confirmed that

Among the many highlights of London’s glorious Olympic Games last year was Somali immigrant Mo Farah pulverizing the competition to win gold in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters in front of an adoring home crowd in the Olympic Stadium. In the aftermath, Farah’s “Mobot” victory sign has been much copied, including by the likes of the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt. But it seems as though the news of Farah’s achievements didn’t reach a television presenter in New Orleans. (MORE: Inside Britain’s Big Night at the Track) WSDU newsreader Latonya Norton interviewed Farah after he won the city’s Rock ‘n’ Roll half-marathon on Sunday. And he heard Norton ask, “Now haven’t you run before?” with her immediately adding insult to injury by repeating the question. “Haven’t you run before? This isn’t your first time?” The diplomatic Farah managed to smile and explain that he’d run a half-marathon before, but that this was his first time running in New Orleans. By now, Norton was on a roll: she congratulated Farah for his victory and for getting “off to a great start” in his efforts to compete at longer distances. “Do you have any other races coming up?” she asked, though neglected to drop in the fact that she was talking to a Olympic gold medallist. (MORE: What British Stars Are Doing After the Games) According to the Guardian, a producer at WSDU said that the recording had been taken out of context, and that Norton “knew he [Farah] was an Olympian.” Her line of questioning, apparently, wasn’t so much about if Farah had run before, but whether it was his first time competing in New Orleans. But an official statement from WSDU management went further by apologizing. We regret our unfortunate phrasing of questions posed to Mr Mo Farah following his impressive victory in this past weekend’s Rock ‘n’ Roll half-marathon in New Orleans and for not acknowledging his status as an Olympic champion. We express our sincere apology to Mr Farah and his many fans who may have been

Back in 2007, I, like many, had never heard of Oscar Pistorius, the South African sprinter whom authorities have charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp. In June of that year, his representatives reached out, and filled me in on his remarkable story: Pistorius, whose legs were amputated below the knee when he 11 months old, was a Paralympic sprinter who was seeking to become the first double amputee to compete against able-bodied athletes at the Olympics. He was passing through New York City, and his reps wondered if TIME would like to chat with him. I eagerly accepted. At the time, the IAAF — track and field’s governing body — argued that Pistorius could not run in able-bodied events, since his prosthetics actually gave him an advantage. Pistorius’ challenge of that IAAF stance drew worldwide attention in the months before the 2008 Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport sided with Pistorius in May of 2008, though he did not quality for those Beijing Games. The scientific debate about his prosthetics continued — David Epstein of Sports Illustrated beautifully explains the arguments here. In 2012, Pistorius qualified for the London Olympics, and was a true inspiration. (PHOTOS: Oscar Pistorius On and Off the Track) I met Pistorius at a track armory in New York City, and we talked after he worked out. (Below, listen to audio excerpts from the conversation). Listening to that interview now, the contrast is striking: here’s a young man, then 20 years old, laying out what seemed like a far-fetched goal — making the Olympics as a double amputee. Six years later, Pistorius actually pulled it off — wow. But now he has shot and killed his girlfriend — whether the act was intentional, a court will decide — and may spend the rest of his life in prison. Here, Pistorius argues his case against the IAAF. “They’ve added a certain negative stigma to Paralympic sports,” he says. He also calls the organization “pathetic.” You can also hear why he was a hero

Updated: Feb. 14, 2013 at 8:10 a.m. EST The extraordinary life of Oscar Pistorius, the South African double amputee who ran sprint in the Olympics despite having no legs, appeared to have taken a tragic and bewildering turn Thursday when the police confirmed that he was arrested and charged with the murder of his girlfriend in the early hours of Valentine’s Day. A spokesman for Gauteng police, Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale, said a 26-year-old man had been arrested after a woman was found dead at a house on the private Silverlakes housing estate, where Pistorius lived, in the South African capital Pretoria. “Paramedics declared the woman dead at the scene and police proceeded with their investigation,” said Mogale. “The woman sustained wounds to her head and the upper body.” The AP reported that the victim was shot four times. (PHOTOS: Oscar Pistorius On and Off the Track) A 9mm pistol was recovered from the scene. Mogale confirmed neither the identity of the arrested man or the dead woman, but said of the arrested man to the Associated Press: “We can’t comment on his emotional well-being, but he is traumatized after losing someone close to him.” South African media quoted other police sources as saying Pistorius had shot dead his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, a 30-year-old swimsuit and lingerie model (Capacity Relations, the agency that represents her, said she was the victim of the shooting). Some reports added Pistorius told police he mistook her for a burglar. Pistorius was to appear at a preliminary hearing at Pretoria magistrates court Thursday, where formal charges will be laid, but that court appearance has now been postponed until Friday. Police in South Africa don’t name suspects in crimes until they’ve appeared in court but police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes said Pistorius was at his home and “there is no other suspect involved.” Beukes also said that there have “previously been allegations of a domestic nature at Mr Pistorius’s home,” and “The SA Police Service were just as surprised this morning to hear on the radio that

In the world of big-time sports, consistency is rarely celebrated. Respected? Yes. Admired? Absolutely. But most fans find it difficult — understandably difficult — to get worked up about consistency. It’s not, after all, a galvanizing trait. “A foolish consistency,” Emerson famously wrote, “is the hobgoblin of little minds.” But what would the Sage of Concord have written had he lived to see what an utterly inspired, mind-blowing consistency like Stan Musial‘s could achieve? Musial, who died Saturday, Jan. 19, at the age of 92, was one of the greatest ballplayers in major league history, but his singular genius as an athlete derived not from an incandescent passion (although there was never a tougher competitor) or from a talent for highlight-reel-worthy drama (although he had his share of late-inning heroics and jaw-dropping performances). Instead, Musial’s magnificence, and a key reason — among many — why he was so beloved for so long was rooted in his uncanny, unwavering, crazily consistent excellence across decades. (PHOTOS: LIFE With the Man: Rare and Classic Photos of Stan Musial) From 1941 to 1963 — quite literally, from the very first to the very last — Musial delivered. He played every single game of his storied, 22-year career with the Cardinals. In his first game, on September 17, 1941, the 20-year-old Musial got two base hits in a 3-2 Cards win. In his last game, on September 29, 1963, the 42-year-old Musial got two base hits in a 3-2 Cards win. He was a three-time MVP, and a three-time World Series champ. Finally, and most improbably, of his 3,630 career hits, exactly half came at home, and half on the road. Go ahead. Read that last one again. All of a sudden, consistency feels pretty damn exciting. As marvelous a ballplayer as Musial was, though, many of the most memorable stories and quotes about him suggest that, at heart, it was his fundamental, unflappable decency — and not merely his phenomenal skills and instincts for the game — that most deeply endeared him to his peers, his rivals and his countless fans.

In this week’s issue of TIME, we explore the cult of Tough Mudder, the obstacle-course racing event held across the country. Tough Mudder was launched in 2010 and has seen rapid growth in people willing to put themselves through a grueling challenge – and paying up to $200 for the experience. Tough Mudder courses are 10-12 miles long, hustling participants through two dozen or so obstacles: there are electric shocks, plunges into water off of high planks, leaps into a vat of ice (that one is called “Arctic Enema”), and many runs through mud. Nearly half a million people participated in a Tough Mudder event last year, and the company is experiencing a boom. After generating $22 million in revenues in 2011, the company had $70 million in revenues last year. Our story, available to subscribers here, explores the reasons behind the rise of Tough Mudder, and some other obstacle course events as well. Social media certainly helps: Tough Mudder has nearly 3 million Facebook “likes.” Let’s face it: post a muddy picture of yourself completing Tough Mudder, and your friends will think it’s pretty cool. I reported from the event in Sarasota, Florida, in early December. Intrigued by the whole scene, I decided to give Tough Mudder a whirl (I’m not trying to seem cool, I swear. Just doing journalistic duty. Right?). See video of my experience, and more Tough Mudders working through the course, here.
