Updated: Feb. 14, 2013 at 8:10 a.m. EST The extraordinary life of Oscar Pistorius, the South African double amputee who ran sprint in the Olympics despite having no legs, appeared to have taken a tragic and bewildering turn Thursday when the police confirmed that he was arrested and charged with the murder of his girlfriend in the early hours of Valentine’s Day. A spokesman for Gauteng police, Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale, said a 26-year-old man had been arrested after a woman was found dead at a house on the private Silverlakes housing estate, where Pistorius lived, in the South African capital Pretoria. “Paramedics declared the woman dead at the scene and police proceeded with their investigation,” said Mogale. “The woman sustained wounds to her head and the upper body.” The AP reported that the victim was shot four times. (PHOTOS: Oscar Pistorius On and Off the Track) A 9mm pistol was recovered from the scene. Mogale confirmed neither the identity of the arrested man or the dead woman, but said of the arrested man to the Associated Press: “We can’t comment on his emotional well-being, but he is traumatized after losing someone close to him.” South African media quoted other police sources as saying Pistorius had shot dead his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, a 30-year-old swimsuit and lingerie model (Capacity Relations, the agency that represents her, said she was the victim of the shooting). Some reports added Pistorius told police he mistook her for a burglar. Pistorius was to appear at a preliminary hearing at Pretoria magistrates court Thursday, where formal charges will be laid, but that court appearance has now been postponed until Friday. Police in South Africa don’t name suspects in crimes until they’ve appeared in court but police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes said Pistorius was at his home and “there is no other suspect involved.” Beukes also said that there have “previously been allegations of a domestic nature at Mr Pistorius’s home,” and “The SA Police Service were just as surprised this morning to hear on the radio that

Before he became infamous for a non-existent girlfriend, in fact, before he became famous as the star linebacker for Notre Dame, Manti Te’o grew up in the largely Mormon community of Laie on the North Shore of the island of Oahu. There, the sense of family is strong and the support for athletics even stronger. He was both linebacker and running back for the local Kahuku High and Intermediate school. All throughout, the young athlete had no greater cheerleader than his own father, Brian. Brian Te’o, who joined the coaching staff of his Kahuku, would work with his son after games reviewing plays gone awry. Manti and his father would often be seen practicing using new methods outside their Laie home, says Junior Ah You, owner of Tita’s Grill in Kahuku. “They trained together, using the ladder, pylometrics and those types of techniques,” says Ah You. “His father worked with him. He comes from an outstanding family, very close. He’s the kind of kid that every father wants or should have.” (MORE: Timeline of a Hoax: Four Years in the Life of Manti Te’o’s ‘Fake’ Relationship) The devotion of the senior Te’o to his talented son was undeniable, no more evident than a week before the girlfriend hoax scandal broke. At that time, the family was still reeling from the meltdown by Notre Dame—and Manti himself—at the BCS Championship in Miami on Jan. 7, when the Fighting Irish were crushed by the Alabama Crimson Tide 42-14. But Brian Te’o seems to have thought that a line had been crossed when an unflattering photograph of his son appeared on the front page of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser with a caption titled “Bowled Over.” He took to his son’s official fan page on Facebook and apparently wrote the following: “Our family has been very gracious to the Star Advertiser by providing interviews and photos of our son in the recent weeks. On our way home from Miami we were ‘privileged’ to see how the Star Advertiser returns that favor by posting a photo

Even though the Olympics are almost upon us, the current sports headlines across much of Europe are celebrating the signing of Swedish soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic by the French club Paris Saint-Germain. The three-year deal is worth a reported $30.5 million for Ibrahimovic’s former team, AC Milan, and an estimated net salary of $17 million a year for the man French dailies are already giddily calling “Ibra.” Sporting director Leonardo described the move as “the biggest deal in this club’s history,” with Ibrahimovic himself thanking his Brazilian boss and the club for making “something impossible possible and now I am very happy … I’m here to make history and I will enjoy all the trophies we bring home.” The striker’s arrival follows the recent recruitment by PSG of more marquee players from Italian sides — Ibrahimovic’s former Milan teammate Thiago Silva, Napoli’s Ezequiel Lavezzi and Pescara’s Marco Verratti — representing nearly $122 million in transactions. Don’t be surprised if this spending spree soon lands PSG the nickname “Chelsea-sur-Seine.” (MORE: After Chelsea Dispatch Barcelona in the Champions League, Is Their Name on the Cup?) But the real story behind these aquisitions is the man making it all happen: Qatari businessman and main PSG shareholder, Nasser al Khelaifi. Not only does it look like the 38-year-old executive has made good on his promise to transform the perennially under-performing, crisis-prone club into a European footballing force, he’s also using the team as a key element within his wider strategy to create a Qatari TV power in global sports broadcasting. “His plan was to take control of a well-known name in European soccer, and make investments necessary to turn it into a quasi-certain contender in high-profile Champions’ League play each year. That’s exactly what he’s done with PSG,” says Vincent Chaudel, a sports economist in Paris for the international management consultancy Kurt Salmon. “All that goes hand-in-hand with his projects in international sports broadcasting.” Ibrahimovic’s signing brings both star quality and formidable offensive power to Paris — something the team and French soccer has been lacking.
