Boxing’s combatants are so often molded by poverty, struggle, and a penchant for vice, it’s hard for a single story to float above a canvas of so many hard-luck tales. But once every generation or so, a fighter’s tale — both inside and outside the ring — becomes transcendent. Manny Pacquiao has been such a boxer. But as he prepares to face rival Juan Manuel Marquez a fourth time on Saturday night, in Las Vegas, the boxing world wonders aloud: can Manny Pacquiao still throw punches like Manny Pacquiao? (MORE: The Meaning and Mythos of Manny Pacquiao) The tale is now familiar: while growing up near General Santos City, Pacquiao hawked sugar doughnuts and cigarettes. He pinched what few pesos he made so his mother could buy more of the soupy rice porridge they survived on. He protected his small stake in the world with his fists. At 16, he lied; too young to fight on a nationally televised boxing program, he told the producers he was old enough to turn pro. He was too skinny so he stashed weights in his pockets to make the 105 pound limit. He won his January 1995 debut on points. It was the first of many victories. (MORE: No More Mr. Nice Boxer — Pacquiao’s Aura and Allure Take A Battering) In 2001, he took an injured Enrique Sanchez’s spot in a bout for Lehlohonolo Ledwaba’s super bantamweight title with only two weeks to prepare for the fight. Pacquiao overwhelmed the South African champion. That January night was the start of a familiar pattern. By 2008, when Pacquiao defeated Juan Manuel Marquez in the pair’s second contest — one many boxing observers thought should have went the other way — he truly arrived. (PHOTOS: The Rise of Manny Pacquiao) Then, he kept rising. Over his next four fights, Pacquiao mauled David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and Miguel Cotto. With 8 seconds left in the second round against Hatton, Pacquiao looped his left hand. He had driven it, like a javelin, through

Floyd Mayweather Jr. constantly refers to his on-screen performances, both inside and outside the ring, as “You Must Watch TV.” And with a cadre of HBO’s 24/7 cameras rolling on Mayweather’s spectacle of a life, why not? But fights that register in the public as appointment viewing are rarer than “Money” likes to admit. Saturday’s square-off with Miguel Cotto is an exception, a veritable “super fight” and easily the biggest bout of the still-young year. Mayweather’s focus is equal parts perfection and history. The Grand Rapids native is wagering his undefeated record and status as best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport. A victory would preserve both, add another title belt to Mayweather’s collection and grow Floyd’s legacy as one of the best boxers in the sport’s long history. Cotto is chasing redemption and reclamation. He will enter the ring an overwhelming underdog against Mayweather, even though he is the younger man and fighting at his natural weight. He admits this fight should have happened “four, five, six years ago.” It could have happened too, if it were not for Cotto’s much-discussed, much-maligned, much-questioned knockout loss to Antonio Margarito in 2008. That fight robbed Cotto of that invincibility all premier fighters enjoy, and temporarily derailed his career. (10 Questions: Wladimir Klitschko) (MORE: A Fight to Forget — Hopkins Loses Underwhelming Bout to Dawson) For the next three years, Cotto became somewhat of a boxing has-been, scoring victories over inferior opponents and turning in a timid, sputtering performance against boxing’s other mega-star, Manny Pacquiao. But Cotto, who hails from Puerto Rico, says his boxing career has come back from the dead, given new life thanks to his December win over Margarito in a rematch. “I have everything I took from Margarito’s victory — things he stole from me, things he grabbed from me,” Cotto, 31, told reporters. “I have it back, and I feel much better right now.” His trainer, Cuban-defector Pedro Diaz, tells reporters the world will see “a new Miguel Cotto” Saturday night. Yet Cotto’s quest is not to showcase
