Early round musical chairs: Andrew Luck went No. 1 overall to the Colts as everyone expected, but Indianapolis ended up being the only team in the top seven to pick at their original slot. Through a trade orchestrated long before Radio City Music Hall opened its doors to fans and prospects, the Washington Redskins drafted Robert Griffin III at No. 2, while a series of last minute deals saw the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles move up to snatch coveted players off the board early. Cleveland leapfrogged one spot to lock down Alabama running back Trent Richardson at No. 3, leaving the Minnesota Vikings with extra picks and USC tackle Matt Kalil at No. 4; Jacksonville flipped picks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get Oklahoma State wideout Justin Blackmon fifth overall, while the Cowboys secured LSU corner Morris Claiborne 6th. Philadelphia finagled Miss. st. D-lineman Fletcher Cox at 12 and even the New England Patriots, known for moving back to take later-round value picks, traded up twice to shore up their weak defense. There weren’t many head-spinning selections Thursday night, especially at the top of the round, but the frenetic swapping kept things interesting. Indeed, the 19 trades that took place in the first round (admittedly, three of them occurred last year) were the most in the NFL since the 1970 merger. (MORE: Q&A: Washington D.C.’s NFL Savior, Robert Griffin III) The other QBs: At 1 and 2 respectively, Luck and Griffin were the no-brainer picks of the night. But the other two quarterbacks to go in the first round were far more intriguing. The Dolphins selected Texas A&M slinger Ryan Tannehill at No. 8 overall, laying their franchise’s hopes on an extremely promising but largely untested QB, who only started 19 games in college after converting from wide receiver. If anyone knows how to shape his potential, it’s Miami’s coaching staff: head coach Joe Philbin developed Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn in Green Bay, while offensive coordinator Mike Sherman was Tannehill’s head coach at

After fourteen years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, wide receiver Hines Ward is retiring from pro football. The game won’t be the same without him. Ward regularly posted 1,000-yard receiving seasons. He was a Super Bowl MVP and a pro-bowler. He holds numerous team records for receiving. He’s only one of eight guys ever to catch 1,000 passes in the NFL. But Ward won’t be enshrined in Canton for receiving. He will be remembered for how played the game: joyful, unyielding and violent. (MORE: Peyton Manning Will Wear Number 18 In Denver. Why, Exactly, Do We Care?) As the NFL has become more of a pass-happy league, the receivers have become taller, swifter, more graceful. The tight ends too; on some teams it’s hard to tell the difference. The Packers’ Jermichael Finley plays split out far more than he gets into a three-point stance. These are all great things if you like down-field bombs and high-scoring games as most fans do. But defenses are getting off easy as fewer guys on offense throw blocks in the open field. The same enforcers who complain about refs overprotecting quarterbacks can no longer hear the chin music. And at just 6-foot and 205 pounds, Ward was one of the finest soloists to ever play the game on offense. Ward’s peers twice named him the dirtiest player in the NFL, mostly for his tendency to level defensive backs unaware. It could get ugly too. In October of 2008, Ward broke Keith Rivers’ jaw, ending the Bengals linebacker’s rookie season. But Ward wasn’t penalized for the hit, which league officials deemed clean. And even his most brutal blocks rarely came off as malicious. In the clip below you can see the type of play Ward was infamous for, leading with his helmet to take out Ravens safety Ed Reed. But shortly after Reed hits the turf clutching his head, you can see Ward signaling Baltimore’s trainers to let them know Reed is hurt. There are plenty of players who will be glad to see Ward go.

Now that Peyton Manning has displaced Tim Tebow in Denver and a trade is in the works, where will the Kneeling One take his talents? Only time will tell, but TIME.com isn’t opposed to taking a few guesses. Any speculation about Destination Tebow has to start in Florida. Gator fans haven’t forgotten his Heisman heroics or two national championships in college, and they’d surely pay to see him come home. Tebow is a draw anywhere. In Florida, he’d be the golden goose. Miami was in hot pursuit of Manning and is one of the few teams left standing after the first round of free agent quarterback musical chairs. All that being said, Tebow wouldn’t be a good choice for Miami’s offense. With new coach Joe Philbin running the show, it’s going to be pass-heavy and run-light, not at all Tebow’s forte. With the eighth pick in next month’s draft, Miami may have a shot at Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill. We’re betting they pin their hopes there. (MORE: How to Sound Smart About Free Agency) Another odd team out in the quarterback raffle, Cleveland might sound like a promising home for Tebow. We don’t see it. Precision passing offenses just don’t have much reason to pick him up unless they want to sell more jerseys, and team president Mike Holmgren isn’t one for flashy moves. (He might reach for Tannehill at fourth overall). Jacksonville, another prospect for a Florida homecoming, makes a lot more sense. The only problem is that they already have two QBs who started last year: Blaine Gabbert, whose rookie season offered promise if not actually good quarterback play, and newly signed veteran Chad Henne, a reliable game-managing backup. GM Gene Smith has passed on Tebow before, but new owner Shahid Khan may not be able to resist the mile-high miracle-maker as a draw, especially with the Jags fighting off broadcast blackouts. In pure business terms, Jacksonville is the most logical fit. Minnesota is another two-quarterback team that could use a financial windfall: After a mixed first season,

Your friends are talking about it. That cousin who always invites you to his lame fantasy football draft parties won’t shut up about it. The new boss at work, the one who thinks you’re a jock so you nod knowingly when he bemoans salary caps changes under the new collective bargaining agreement, wants to know what you think. Yes, it’s NFL free agency time, when professional football players whose contracts have expired hit the open market, and here at Keeping Score, we’ve got you covered. The water cooler is nothing to fear anymore. Here are four things you can say to sound smart about the latest contract developments in pro football. Matt Flynn is intriguing. Peyton Manning talk is for laymen. (If you get the Mannings confused, Eli was the one wearing the headband in those Double Stuf Oreo commercials.) If you want to one-up your co-workers, talk about the other hot quarterback on the market: Matt Flynn. Start off with some stats. In just two starts for the Green Bay Packers, Flynn threw for 734 yards and nine touchdowns, most of which came in last season’s rout of the Detroit Lions that left Flynn with team records for passing yards and touchdown tosses in a single game. Now, someone may say that he’s untested, but you can point out that Flynn was underestimated in college too, and when given a full-time starting job his senior year, he led the LSU Tigers to a national championship. Flynn is overhyped—he’s only played for very good teams at both levels—but he’s a blank slate and whomever you’re talking to will have an opinion. Where might Flynn go? Here’s what we know: He’s talking to both the Miami Dolphins and the Cleveland Browns. For extra credit, casually observe that while Miami badly wants Peyton, new head coach Joe Philbin was Flynn’s coordinator in Green Bay. (MORE: The Business of Wooing Peyton Manning) How about them Buccaneers! If the topic of free agency “winners” comes up, your go-to talking point should be the Tampa

Peyton Manning’s departure last week from the Colts was emotional–for the 13-year veteran, the ownership and the Indiana sports faithful, who were all lucky enough to experience more than a decade of superb football together. But the split was rational. Manning will get a chance to write a coda to his already remarkable career without a once-in-a-generation prospect looking over his shoulder. The Colts will avoid the kind of bitter rift that nearly ruined Brett Favre’s legacy in Green Bay while clearing enough salary room to build around their next quarterback. Everyone wins. Everyone except Colts QB-of-the-future Andrew Luck, who all the draft-board geeks say Indy will pick at No. 1 next month. We should preface this with an acknowledgment of the perennial debate in pro football about whether it’s better to put top-drafted rookie quarterbacks right into starting jobs or groom them on the sideline for a few years as understudies to wily vets. As with questions like ‘What’s the right call on 4th and inches?’ or ‘Is Tony Romo a good quarterback?’ the answer to the start ‘em or sit ‘em debate is completely situational. And this particular situation–the Indianapolis Colts in 2012–is not a good one for young Luck. (MORE: Why the Colts Dumped Peyton Manning) To state the obvious, Peyton Manning would have been great to learn from. He was an on-field offensive coordinator for much of his time in Indy, unrivaled in the no-huddle and probably the best pure passer in the NFL for a decade. The Colts couldn’t pay him $28 million for a tutoring gig, but it’s hard to imagine a guy you’d rather put your rookie quarterback behind. Unfortunately for Luck, this is the least of his problems. New head coach Chuck Pagano, who comes over from the fearsome Ravens defense, has never run an offense before, although Luck will have the benefit of offensive coordinator Bruce Arians (who was actually Manning’s QB coach in ’98) and experienced Colts hand Clyde Christensen at quarterbacks coach. They’ll be asking a lot of him.
