Olympic Gold medalist Ted Ligety had the best year of his career during the 2013 season, becoming the fifth racer in history and the first in 45 years to win three gold medals at the World Ski Championships. Currently, Ligety has four season titles, 21 first-place wins and 43 podiums in World Cup competition.
Things didn’t always look so good for him, though—in this video, Ligety’s parents recall a time when he was far from outstanding. “Boys were beating him, and girls were beating him,” Ligety’s mom says with a laugh. “He said, ‘Well, I gotta do something.’”
At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Ligety will be competing in the Super Combined, Super G, Giant Slalom and Slalom events.
