Commissioner Don Garber, David Beckham and Mayor Carlos Gimenez attend a press conference to announce their plans to launch a new Major League Soccer franchise in Miami, Florida.

David Beckham plans to bring Major League Soccer to Miami, announcing this morning that he wants to purchase an expansion team there on the condition that he can secure a location and financing for a new stadium.

“This is an exciting time, and something we’re really looking forward to bringing to Miami,” said Beckham, at a press conference Wednesday morning.

The former Los Angeles Galaxy and Manchester United soccer player has the right to buy an expansion team at the reduced price of $25 million, believed to have been part of his deal with Galaxy.

Beckham might not be the only world-famous athlete with a financial interest in the new team, as Al Jazeera reports that Beckham has reached out to Miami heat star LeBron James  as a potential backer of the project.
