When retired German footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger announced to the world that he is gay, he became the highest profile player to do so and only the third professional in over 20 years. He hopes his announcement can help young gay players see that they can still reach the very top of the game and remain true to themselves.
He waited until after he was retired to come out... how is that remaining true to himself or inspirational for young gay players? If he was still playing the game it'd be relevant, otherwise his coming out only reinforces the belief that young players must NOT come out in order to reach the top of the game.
@straydog I agree. I see no courage on his part now by coming out.
