Ten former National Hockey League players have filed a class action lawsuit claiming the league hasn’t done enough to to protect its players from concussions.
The suit, filed on Monday in Washington, includes All-Star forward Gary Leeman plaintiff, and accuses the league, among other things, of not doing enough to protect players from harm before 2010, when targeting a player’s head became a penalty. The suit alleges that even after the league created a concussion program, it didn’t take enough action to reduce the severity of concussions.
The lawsuit comes three months after the NFL settled a class action suit with thousands of former players who developed dementia or other concussion-related ailments. The NFL agreed to pay $765 million to settle those claims.
In response to Monday’s lawsuit, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said, “We are completely satisfied with the responsible manner in which the league and the players’ association have managed player safety over time, including with respect to head injuries and concussions.” Daly said the league intended to vigorously defend the case.
