The coach of the Florida Atlantic University football team unexpectedly resigned Wednesday after the school confronted him with allegations of using illegal drugs, the school announced.
Carl Pelini, who has a 5 – 11 record since taking over the team last year, in a brief statement apologized “for exercising poor judgment.” Defensive Coordinator Pete Rekstis also submitted his resignation after the school confronted them about the drug use, FAU said.
Pat Chun, director of athletics at the school, announced the resignation in a statement, saying the action “is in the best interests of our student-atheltes and the University overall.”
“I can assure you that we have no information that suggests anyone other than these two individuals engaged in these activities,” he said in the statement.
Offensive Coordinator Brian Wright will take over as interim head coach.
