Kentucky High Schools Ban Postgame Handshakes

Officials stop the tradition hoping to end fights between teams

Kentucky’s athletic sanctioning body ordered high schools to put an end to postgame handshakes at sporting events after more than two dozen fights have broken out after games in the past three years, according to Associated Press.

The Tuesday ruling, posted on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association website, said it was “disappointing” that such action was necessary, as the handshaking tradition teaches players—and high school kids especially—good sportsmanship.

Schools that choose to conduct handshakes must carefully supervise the postgame ritual and report any incidents to the KHSAA. Teams were instructed to leave the facilities immediately after a game at the risk of being penalized.

As a  resident of Kentucky I'm deeply embarrassed by this decision. It points out in bold relief the desperate need for coaches, parents, and athletes to be trained in and held accountable for a comprehensive understanding and expression of genuine sportsmanship. I hope the KHSAA will aggressively seek out and initiate a much needed partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance, a movement that addresses these very issues and so much more.

This is insane! Next we will ban testing because some people cheat on tests. How about making a concerted effort to teach the right behavior instead of abdicating our responsibility to our kids. Very sad move on the part of Kentucky HS Sports.

So our solution to unsportsman-like conduct during a specifically and deliberately sportsman-like activity is not to ban the individuals from participating in sport, but instead to ban the activity. Wowsers.
