Trainer Bob Baffert can’t care much for the phrase “third time lucky.” In 1997, his Silver Charm (the Florida-bred son of Silver Buck) saw off Captain Bodgit in the Kentucky Derby and Free House in the Preakness. And holding the lead 50 yards from the wire at the Belmont, his chances at winning the crown looked promising. But Touch Gold spoiled the party by winning by three-quarters of a length. It probably wasn’t much of a consolation that the horse won the 1997 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Three-Year-Old Male Horse and would enter the United States’ Racing Hall of Fame a decade later.
