The most recent final was deservedly won by South Africa, who would have been as surprised as anyone to be facing a plucky England side, considered they swept them away with ease 36-0 in the group stage. The final was far closer — 15-6 to the Springboks — but England fans will always wonder about the try that never was. Trailing 9-3, Mark Cueto touched down for the score but referee Alain Rolland asked the TV match official, the Australian Stuart Dickinson, for an official ruling which was that Cueto’s foot was over the line at the time. On such fine margins are World Cup’s won and lost.
