On Sunday VCU, out of Richmond and the Colonial Athletic Conference, whipped top-seeded Kansas, 71-61, to make the Final Four. Here are a few fun facts about VCU, since NewsFeed knows you know nothing about the school, and neither did we.

  • Doctor, social activist, and clown Hunter “Patch” Adams, subject of the eponymous 1996 movie starring Robin Williams, went to VCU
  • Authors Tom Robbins and David Baldacci count themselves as alums
  • A basketball-playing VCU alum is Boston Celtic guard Gerald Henderson, whose steal and game-tying layup in Game 2 of 1984 NBA Finals helped the Celtics top the Los Angeles Lakers for the title.
  • VCU is the first research university in the nation to have a program in homeland security and emergency preparedness
  • The school’s basketball coach, Shaka Smart, is 33, looks like a high school junior, and is about to become a very rich man if one of the major conference schools with job openings, like Oklahoma or North Carolina State, makes him an offer, which they surely will.
